A study concluding that multiple sclerosis patients with thyroid disorder are at higher risk for restless leg syndrome, was presented at 7th Congress of the European Academy of Neurology. Multiple sclerosis, a chronic autoimmune disease, has varied neuropsychiatric symptoms which leads to increased morbidity and decreased quality of life. Being an autoimmune disorder, patients with multiple sclerosis often suffer from autoimmune thyroiditis. The study included 200 patients with multiple sclerosis who were examined with International Restless Legs Syndrome Questionnaire and International Restless Legs Syndrome Severity Scale along with presence of thyroid disorders. The results found a significant association of thyroid disorder with restless leg syndrome with the risk being 6.81-times higher in patients with thyreopathy. Multiple sclerosis when associated with restless legs syndrome can lead to sleep disturbances, excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue. Active screening for restless legs syndrome in patients with multiple sclerosis, especially when they suffer from any thyroid disorder can improve the clinical management of patients.
