Other types of dementias could be more concerning than alzheimer’s disease due to high mortality rates, says a new study. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed including 78 studies to compare the difference in mortality rates between those without dementia and with various types of dementia. The study encompassed 63125 individuals with dementia and 152353 controls, with all dementia patients having higher mortality rate. The all-cause mortality was highest for Lewy body dementia. Shorter survival time from disease onset was observed in those with non-Alzheimer’s dementia compared to those with Alzheimer’s disease. However, this was more significant for vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy body dementia. The mean survival time after the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease was 5·8 years while younger age at death was more common in y non-Alzheimer’s disease dementia. Although, alzheimer’s disease remains the major contributor of mortality, other forms do need patient-centric treatment and rehabilitation programmes which may improve the prognosis and care.
